Botany is the scientific study of plants. It involves the scientific study of both domesticated and wild plants. Plants constitute the most predominant feature of our environment especially in the tropical region. It can be categorically stated that there can be almost no life on earth without plants. This is because plants are the first converter of solar/light energy into chemical energy for use by all other living organisms. Plants also play many other important roles in the environment both locally and globally.
Botany like any other science, may be studied from two aspects: the pure and applied or economic perspective. Pure botany deals with the study of plants as they form part of nature, while applied botany deals with how it knowledge can be applied to the well-being of mankind. The pure botany include disciplines like morphology, anatomy, cytology, physiology, ecology plant geography, taxonomy/systematic botany, etc., while the applied botany include agriculture, horticulture, plant pathology, pharmacognosy, forestry, plant breeding and ethnobotany and conservation biology.
